"Law school에 언제부터 GRE® 시험을 인정하기 시작했나요?
2016년에 애리조나 대학교의 The James E. Rogers College of Law는 GRE®를 포함하도록 입학 시험 옵션을 확장한 최초의 학교가 되었습니다.
그러한 시도를 한 이유는 다양한 전문영역의 법률전문가를 양성할 필요성이 높았기 때문입니다.
그 이후로 많은 다른 로스쿨에서도 LSAT 점수 대신 GRE® 점수를 받기 시작했습니다.
하지만, 전체의 10~20%만 실제로 GRE®를 냈습니다.
"GRE® 시험을 많이 제출하지 않은 이유는 무엇이죠?
이유는 ABA의 인정때문이었습니다. 미국 변호사 협회(American Bar Association, ABA)는 그동안 GRE® 시험을 로스쿨의 대체시험으로 공인하지는 않았습니다. 로스쿨의 인가 및 규정을 ABA에서 주관하는데 이를 인정해주지 않으니 로스쿨 지원자들이 GRE®가 상대적으로 쉬워도 LSAT을 치는 것을 선호했습니다.
"GRE® 시험은 아직도 공식인정이 안되나요?
아닙니다. 2021년 12월에 ABA는 그동안 다양한 검증을 한 결과를 바탕으로 GRE®를 로스쿨 공식 대체시험으로 인정했습니다. LSAT과 동일한 자격시험이 되었으며 GRE® 점수만 내도 입학이 가능합니다. 이 차이가 무엇이냐면, 이제 로스쿨에서는 LSAT과 GRE®를 어떠한 차별없이 공식적으로 동등한 점수로 인정해야 된다는 뜻입니다. 이 결과로 인하여, 북미컨설턴트들은 GRE® 시험으로 로스쿨을 진학하는 비율은 크게 늘어날 것으로 예측하고 있습니다.

이제 ABA의 공식인증으로 인해 전체 로스쿨에서 다 인정하게 될 것이지만, 2021년 초를 기준으로 GRE®를 관리하는 ETS 에 따르면 현재 GRE® 점수를 인정하는 로스쿨은 다음과 같습니다.

"현재 GRE® 지원율은 어떻게 되나요?
일단 공식적으로 GRE® 시험으로 지원을 한 비율은 알 수 없습니다. 다만, 전체 합격한 사람들 중 GRE® 시험 비율은 알 수 있습니다.
ABA의 인정이 되기 전인 2021년까지는 하버드나 조지타운의 경우에는 30~40명 정도의 합격생이 있습니다.
이 비율도 높습니다. 이유는 원래부터 오래전에 LSAT을 준비했던 사람들이 당연히 높은 비율을 가지고 있는 것입니다.
이제 공식적으로 인정됨에 따라, 곧 MBA처럼 합격생 중 40~50% 정도는 GRE® 시험으로 지원한 학생들이 될 것으로 바라보고 있습니다. (공식 시험이 2개 이상인 경우에는 대부분 50% 정도의 비중이 각각 가지고 있습니다.)

"왜 GRE® 시험 지원율이 높아질 것으로 예상하나요?
당연히 LSAT보다 상대적으로 공부하기 편한 부분이 있기 때문입니다.
논리력 위주의 시험인 GRE®가 법 지식까지 포함된 LSAT보다는 공략하기는 쉽습니다.
